When the long winter season comes around, it’s a source of panic for many households in America. But the impending Arctic weather need not be the signal for your family budget to freeze to a standstill. If you keep a cool head while temperatures around you are dropping, you can keep your utility bills to an acceptable level. It just takes a little bit of proactive ingenuity and simple common sense. Here’s a few handy tips that will help you save a great deal of money during the winter months.
Bundle Up, And Keep Your Thermostat Temperature Down
Were you aware that it’s actually a good idea to keep the temperature on your thermostat as low as you can stand it all throughout the winter months? Of course, there’s a common sense limit to be observed here, as not every single person can function comfortably at the same temperature. However, it’s an excellent idea to keep your thermostat temperature set to a level that everyone in your household can agree to. For most families, the average temperature seems to be around 65-68 degrees.
By keeping your thermostat at no higher than 68 degrees, and turning it off when you’re away during the day at work, or visiting friends or family during the weekend, you’ll be able to save an average of 10 to 15 percent off your monthly utility bill.
Make Sure Your Gutters And Drains Are Free And Clear
It’s an excellent idea to clean out your gutters and drains long before the icy winter season sets in. If you’ve ever had a drain or gutter burst because they were full of ice, you already know what a miserable chore it was to get them fixed. It’s best to be proactive and get the issue taken care of before it has a chance to rear its ugly head.
If All Else Fails, Seek Help From A Professional
Of course, not everyone is cut out to be an instant professional when it comes to fixing up their homes for the winter season. If you’re feeling the pinch of high winter utility bills, it may be best to pick up the phone and contact a professional who can give you expert tips and advice on how to keep your home warm without breaking your family budget. We are really lucky to have a fireplace insert and not have to use any heat during the day. At night we have it set at 65 and it only runs then. Saves us a bundle
Great tips although currently, mine is at 75 because my old home has about no insulation in it and I am in process of getting it all insulated. Next year, mine will be set like this
We try not to run the heat so much and instead put on long pants, long sleeves, and socks to keep ourselves warm.
We seal off any drafts from doors ans windows too, that always helps too, and we keep the heat at a set temp. We also use our fireplace more.
We like to keep ours at 64 during the day and 59 at night. We stay pretty comfortable.
I like my programmable thermostat and it keeps the temp down when I'm away or asleep.slehan at juno dot com
