When I was a teen, I had thought that I was lucky. I thought this because unlike my peers, I did not have any issues with acne. I found the issue to be quite embarrassing, and as I got older, had babies, I found that it seemed to get worse. I say worse because when I first started showing signs, the flare ups would come and go, and I had used makeup to cover up the redness, thinking that I could hide it. But once I hit my 30’s, the more I tried to hide it, the worse the breakouts seemed to get, and now, the redness seems to have become a regular part of my face, with patches on my cheeks, neck, nose, and forehead.
Making me one of the 16 million Americans with rosacea. And I have learned that rosacea is a chronic inflammatory and vascular skin condition. It causes facial redness, which is an extremely common and frustrating symptom, affecting up to 93% of rosacea sufferers. Leaving me feeling very self-conscious and embarrassed to be seen when I have days with the redness covering the majority of my face, and even leaving my eyes red and irritated.
So when I heard about Mirvaso® Gel, I was excited to learn more about it. It is the first and only FDA approved prescription medication for the topical treatment of the persistent facial redness of rosacea. 0.33%* is an alpha adrenergic agonist indicated for the topical treatment of
persistent (nontransient) facial erythema of rosacea in adults 18 years of age
or older. Adverse Events: In clinical trials, the most common adverse
reactions (≥1%) included erythema, flushing, skin burning sensation and contact
dermatitis. Warnings/Precautions: MIRVASO Gel should be used with
caution in patients with depression, cerebral or coronary insufficiency,
Raynaud’s phenomenon, orthostatic hypotension, thromboangiitis obliterans,
scleroderma, or Sjögren’s syndrome. Alpha-2 adrenergic agents can lower blood
pressure. MIRVASO Gel should be used with caution in patients with severe or
unstable or uncontrolled cardiovascular disease. Serious adverse reactions
following accidental ingestion of MIRVASO Gel by children have been reported. Keep
MIRVASO Gel out of reach of children. Not for oral, ophthalmic, or
intravaginal use.
*Each gram of gel contains 5 mg of brimonidine tartrate,
equivalent to 3.3 mg of brimonidine free base
