Disney's Queen of Katwe on Blu-Ray

When it comes to spending time with my family and taking the time to spend quality time with each of my kids separately, I find that along with a girls day out my daughter and I also enjoy finding books and movies to watch together. I have found that when it comes to both the books and movies that I enjoy sharing with my daughter, that I like to seek out the stories that have a strong woman role. So when we were sent the movie, Disney’s Queen of Katwe on Blu-Ray to review, we both found that we were excited to watch it together as well as share our review with our readers.

See, I find that I like to seek out those strong women characters to share with my daughter to show her and also encourage her when it comes to reaching for the stars. And in this movie, you get a very inspirational story that is based on the true story of a young girl (Madina Nalwanga) from the streets of Uganda whose world changes when she is introduced to the game of chess. This game changes the young ladies life forever, and with the support of her family and community, she finds that she can beat the odds that are stacked up against her and live her dream of being a international chess champion! Along with this amazing movie you get some great extras when you pick up the Blu-Ray copy which include audio commentary, a behind the scene’s look at the recording of the song by Alicia Keys, and some fun deleted scenes that include:

  • Graduation – Robert is alone at his graduation.
  • Job Application – Robert checks in on the status of his job application.
  • Dancing and Rent – Phiona joins in dancing with local girls before the landlady pulls her away.
  • Entering the Hospital – Harriet tries to look presentable as they rush Brian to the hospital.
  • Escape from the Hospital – The family sneaks out of the hospital.
  • They Can’t Go to Budo – Robert second-guesses taking the kids to the competition at King’s College Budo.
  • Flood (Extended Scene) – A nearly 7-minute scene before, during and after the house is flooded.
  • Phiona’s Chess Club – Phiona comes full circle as she teaches a little boy the same lessons Robert taught her in chess club.

Then when it comes to sharing this as a family movie night feature, we found that aside from my daughter and I enjoying the movie together that we were also able to enjoy this movie along with the rest of the family! Which in all, brings us a movie that is perfect for the movie times I share with my daughter and even the rest of my family on our family movie nights, and you can enjoy this movie too when you head out today to bring home your copy of Disney’s Queen of Katwe!
