Digital Detox Tips for the Whole Family

Digital detoxIn this highly digital age where almost 400 iPhones are sold every minute, it can feel like your family is glued to a screen 24/7. When we pay more attention to those screens than the world around us, it’s easy to feel disconnected, even from your own family members. That’s why a good digital detox is important. Here, we’ll give you some digital detox tips that the whole family can get behind.

Designate “Phone-Free” Spaces

This is one of the simplest ways to make sure everyone is being mindful about their technology usage. By creating a few central “phone-free” spaces in your home, you’re ensuring that there’s always space to connect with one another and get away from those little screens. Some common “phone-free” areas to designate in your home include at the dinner table and in bedrooms or on the bed, specifically.

Get Creative

Literally! Creating art together can be a great way to get away from the screens. And considering painting is already the most popular art medium, consider investing in some acrylics and a few paintbrushes. You can pick a prompt and compare everyone’s final painting or paint freely and be surprised by what everyone comes up with. No matter what you choose, getting creative and celebrating your family’s creativity is a great way to bond and ditch the digital world.

Plan Screen-less Family Nights

How often do you sit down with your family to watch a movie only to find that everyone is on their phone instead? Planning one or two screen-less family nights every week can help you solve that problem. Not only do you get an opportunity to plan a fun event, but you also get to spend quality time with your family. Your screen-less family night doesn’t even have to happen in the house! Planning a family picnic at your local park is a great way to get out of the house with your family if the weather permits.

Pursue Outside Interests

The internet has all the information you could ever want. But if your kids are interested in pursuing a hobby, it’s your job to help them bring that into the real world. So if one of your kids is into cars, plan an afternoon to help them learn all sorts of things. You might be able to learn that tires are made of almost 200 different materials on the internet, but what’s the point if you never learn how to care for the tires on a car? Taking the time to express interest in your kids’ hobbies outside of the digital world can make the real world that much more exciting.

Above all else, it’s important to be a role model in your family. You are the first and biggest influence on your kids, after all! If you make a noticeable effort to spend less time with a screen and more time with your family, your kids will be more likely to follow suit. Are you ready to help your family ditch their digital habits?
