It is hard to believe that we are now in the month of November, but here we are and for me that means it is time to start preparing for our Thanksgiving Dinner! When I think of Thanksgiving, I think of family, I think of the dishes that we enjoyed as children, ones that my grandma would serve and my mom would serve. I also think of how we would start our process, by heading to the store with our list, then picking out the biggest Butterball Turkey we could find, and go from there. So with that in mind, I find that I am once again following that tradition, and starting our Thanksgiving process by writing out the recipes, marking off the ingredients we will need, and heading out to find our Butterball Turkey!
For me, I have found that one recipe that I have adored over the years is the cranberry sauce. I can remember watching as my mom would stir in the cranberries and taste until the sauce was just right, then put the sauce in its own special dish to set out on the table.
To get started with the cranberry sauce, you need 16oz fresh cranberries, 1/2 cup fresh squeezed orange juice, 1/4 cup brown sugar, and the zest of 1 lemon.
On a stove top put all ingredients in a sauce pan, let them boil while stirring occasionally. Allow all of the cranberries to burst. Continue to stir until sauce thickens up. Remove from heat then place in serving dishes, then place in the refrigerator to cool.
With the cranberry sauce, we have always prepared the dish the night before, along with the rest of the prep work, allowing it to be nice and chilled for serving with the Thanksgiving dinner.
This recipe along with many others are ones we have followed for many years, allowing that tradition to continue with our family so everyone can continue to enjoy the meal as we have always done! Along with our cranberry sauce, we also enjoy creating homemade pies which include pecan and pumpkin pies. Then when it comes to the turkey, we like to start out by separating the skin from the breast, then adding butter under to give a juicy inside with a crispy skin on the top. Once we do that, we then flavor the outside with more butter along with seasonings, put the stuffing inside, then place the turkey in the oven for the suggested amount of time that goes with the weight of the bird!
In all, making our Thanksgiving one that is new each year, but with a throwback twist when we bring some of those classics to the table!
