How To Encourage Learning Outside Of School Hours (Guest Post)

Learning does not have to stop in the classroom. The outside world provides plenty of opportunities for children to learn and gives them a holistic approach to learning. Furthermore, some students tend to learn by doing things and it can increase their communication skills, socialization, and understanding. Aside from getting them reading tutors or math tutors, there are other ways to encourage them to learn outside of school hours. Here are a few ideas:

  • After-school organizations. Clubs and organizations are great for children who want to expand their learning and hone their skills and interests. Look for after-school activities for your child that will allow them to learn new things, and at the same time enjoy. This is also an opportunity for them to socialize with other kids who share the same interests. Research on the different organizations in your neighborhood, or check your child’s school for after-school activities that are available.

  • Visit museums. Another way to encourage your child to learn outside the classroom is by visiting museums. This is especially helpful if you visit a child-centered museum where they can learn about different topics including physics, nature, arts, and other interesting subjects. They also get to do hands-on activities that will encourage them to learn new things. Check your local museum occasionally and check the exhibitions available.

  • Make use of technology. Children nowadays are already invested in technology, so it is a good idea to use that as a medium for learning. Purchase educational games and programs that you can install in your home computer and give your child time to play these games. This is also a great way for children to learn while they are having fun.

  • Outdoor adventure. Take the children outdoors for an adventure. Prepare activities such as camping or fishing. The outside world offers plenty of learning opportunities to offer. You can go bird-watching, learn to make fire, observe insects and animals, or just enjoy the beauty of nature. You’ll be surprised at the amount of things children can learn just by being outdoors.

  • Use the television. Children like sitting in front of the television for hours. Use this to your advantage by allowing them to watch educational programs that are appropriate for their age. You can rent videos and purchase DVDs that you can let them watch after their lessons. This is another great way to foster learning by having fun.

  • Sports. Your children can also learn a lot by engaging in a sport that they like. They can lean about teamwork, improve their skills, and learn to socialize with other kids. This is also a great way to get your child outdoors instead of having them in front of the television or the computer at all times.

With these tips, you can easily change your child’s lifestyle and encourage them to learn even when they are not inside the classroom. The world, too, can be a classroom if you know where to go and what to do. Keep things fun for children so that they don’t lose interest in what they are doing. With these tips, your child is sure to have a holistic learning experience while growing up.
